Quentin Tarantino’s violent comedy thriller, which won the Palme d’or at Cannes, still feels exciting and witty: none of its imitators have achieved quite such shiny, hard-edged glory. The interweaving storylines include two hit men (John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson) chasing a briefcase, a boxer (Bruce Willis) looking for a watch, and two robbers (Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer) who take down a diner. After the dismal Revolver and Swept Away (which starred his ex-wife Madonna), Guy Ritchie attempted a return to Lock Stock-esque form with this testosterone-heavy, twisty tale set in London’s underworld. The plot moves vaguely around the theft of a painting from a Russian mobster (Karl Roden), but it gets tangled up in various sub-plots. Tom Wilkinson and an impressive Toby Kebbell also star. Bette Davis gives an outrageous, unhibited performance as the one-eyed Mrs Taggart, a villainous matriarch, in this entertaining Hammer black comedy directed by Roy Ward Baker. It’s based on an earlier play in which the monstrous mother’s idea of a good time is to psychologically torture her three sons. The humour is dark and cruel but still retains a camp edge. Shelia Hancock also stars.
