Seeing the First World War as it really looked

-

sir – What a wonderful idea of Peter Jackson’s to remaster in colour those amazing films of the First World War (report, January 23).

I might get a real idea of what my father’s three brothers – of whom he and his sister were never able to speak – actually looked like. Visiting their graves in France only brought me a little closer.

The man who sat next to me in my first job – who said he was lucky to have returned, albeit with only one eye and one arm, when his fellow officers died around him in just a few days – would have loved to have had such a tangible memory of his and their lost youth.
