Oxford college bans cocktails in pint glasses to rein in drunks
AN OXFORD college has been banned from serving cocktails in pint glasses at big events, following complaints about extreme drunkenness among students.
The ban was imposed after Wadham’s domestic bursar and JCR bar steward reviewed arrangements at large events. They recommended that at future events, cocktails should be served in half-pint glasses only and alcoholic content of drinks should be limited to six per cent.
The new policies will apply to annual student-run events at the college including Wadstock, a music festival, and Queerfest, the final event of Queerweek, a celebration of “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, queer, intersex and asexual culture”.
According to the minutes of the college’s liaison committee, the Dean “expressed concern” about the lack of food on offer to students at Queerfest.
After the Student Union explained that students who needed the food most tended to be those who had consumed a lot of alcohol prior to arrival, the Dean “highlighted the lack of contingency rooms for those Wadham attendees living off the main site who, due to intoxication, would be better off spending the night in the college”.
Some students were so drunk when leaving Queerfest that they were refused service by local taxis, it was said.
