Carrey cleared over former lover’s suicide
JIM CARREY has been cleared of involvement in the suicide of his former girlfriend after a lengthy legal battle with her family.
Cathriona White, who dated Carrey intermittently for three years, was found dead at her Los Angeles home after taking a cocktail of prescription drugs in September 2015, aged 30.
Carrey, 56, said that he was devastated by her death and attended the funeral in Tipperary, Ireland.
But relations with White’s family soured after a letter from the make-up artist emerged, in which she told Carrey she felt she had been “disrespected, degraded, called a whore, an opportunist, threatened”. It was not clear when the letter was written.
White’s estranged husband, Mark Burton, and her mother, Brigid Sweetman, took legal action against the actor, claiming he had supplied White with the drugs that killed her.
Ms Sweetman also claimed Carrey gave her daughter three sexually transmitted diseases and pressured her to keep it quiet before her death. Last October, Carrey filed a counter-suit against White’s estranged husband and her mother, insisting they were trying to extort him.
Text messages between the couple showed fraught exchanges during their on-off relationship.
In one text, White said: “I met you, you introduced me to cocaine, prostitutes, mental abuse and disease. You did good things for me but being with you broke me down as a person, Jim.”
But the actor’s legal team claimed White forged medical records to make it appear that she had no STDS before meeting Carrey. The actor said that White had used a friend’s medical records and changed the name and date on them to make it seem as if they were her own. A spokesman for Carrey confirmed that the lawsuit against him was dismissed on Jan 25.
