James Horwill, Australia
New Zealand have been very good in the Rugby Championship, given there has not been a different winner since the Wallabies in 2015, whereas in the Six Nations the teams are quite well matched across the board.
Last year’s Englandscotland game aside, which was a blowout, normally the sides are pretty well matched. Even Italy on their day can make life quite difficult. In last year’s Rugby Championship we started to see a bit more of that competitiveness between New Zealand and Australia after the All Blacks won heavily in Brisbane.
What I have noticed makes the Six Nations a great competition since moving over here is the closeness of all the countries. There is such an extensive history between all the countries, not only on the field but also away from rugby. The support that it generates is quite astonishing.
It’s never a question of whether the stadium will be full, only whether you can get a ticket.
Where the Six Nations has noticeably improved is that before the bonus-point structure was introduced, each game was just about winning rather than playing attractive rugby, which showed in those lowscoring games.
That Bledisloe rivalry though between New Zealand and Australia is hard to top though.
It is just ingrained into you from a young age that when it comes to sport, we don’t like the Kiwis and they don’t like us.
