Fidel Castro’s depressed eldest son takes own life

The eldest son of Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolution­ary leader, committed suicide on Thursday after suffering for months from depression, Cuban staterun media has reported.

Fidel Castro Díaz-balart, a nuclear scientist also known as “Fidelito”, had been admitted to hospital but was later treated for depression as an outpatient.

Born in 1949, he was the subject of a custody dispute as a child, with his mother reportedly taking him to the US and his father taking him back to Cuba.
