All-out enjoyment

SIR – Village cricket is said to be in decline as cricketers now want to be home by 7pm (Sport, February 1).

Having spent over 20 years playing club cricket throughout Kent, I found it was the norm for a game to finish at around 7pm when players would adjourn to the pavilion to socialise and discuss the rights and wrongs of each other’s dismissals. It was considered rude if the visiting team did not “buy their jug”.

If players want to be home early, they should begin play at 11.30am. This will also excuse them from the tedium of morning shopping.
