Hot under the collar

SIR – Readers wonder whether the King Brothers’ lyrics – “Standing on the corner, watching all the girls go by” – are fit for broadcast in today’s climate (Letters, February 2).

The song We’re Having a Heat Wave goes: “She started a heat wave/ By letting her seat wave / In such a way that / The customers say that / She certainly can can-can.”

Lord Reith insisted on altering this to: “She started a heat wave/by making her feet wave.”

SIR – A line from the 1956 song Standing On The Corner remains true today, but only just: “Brother you can’t go to jail for what you’re thinking.”
