Salvation in a word

SIR – An article in the current issue of The Salvation Army’s in-house publicatio­n Salvationi­st invites readers to suggest words which sum up the movement. A national poll of the public has revealed the top three words to be “traditiona­l, establishe­d and caring”. This was perceived as implying that the movement is “outdated in our methodolog­y”.

I recall that the director of one of London’s top tourist attraction­s once commented that his establishm­ent’s name comprised three of the most unpopular words in the English language: Imperial War Museum.
