SIR – There are frequent calls for additional funding for the north of England.

What about north Devon? Our trains, which run less than once an hour, take 75 minutes to travel 40 miles, and 80 per cent of our only major road is just one lane. Funding for our schools is below average, and hundreds of new houses are being built without supporting infrastruc­ture. They are also unaffordab­le to local people, many of whom are working for the minimum wage.

On the other hand, we have wonderful beaches and our air quality is excellent. Shirley Jewell
