What the DPP said
SIR – Alison Saunders, the Director of Public Prosecutions, has a nerve to say prosecutors “neither presume a suspect is guilty, nor automatically believe a complainant” (Letters, February 9).
Paul Gambaccini, in his book about his experience of being under suspicion of sexual offences, described an interview Mrs Saunders gave to ITV: “She continues to refer to all complainants as ‘victims’. Not once does she use the word ‘accuser’.”
Surely it is Mrs Saunders who is “doing a disservice to the professionals in the criminal justice system”, not Allison Pearson. Ashley Franklin

SIR – It is good to see Mrs Saunders respond to criticism.
Recent rape cases have failed because crucial evidence was not made available to the defence. Whose fault is this? I thought it was a Crown Prosecution Service responsibilty. Paul Richmond
