Same-sex dalliance? I’ve been there, too

-

Thank heavens for Sir Ian Mckellen, who was on the Today programme this week discussing sexual fluidity. Talking about his work in schools, he said that young people reject labels such as “gay” and “bisexual” in favour of just being themselves.

I loved this because it cuts through all the rubbish some people spout about young people nowadays choosing fluidity because it’s trendy or fashionable. Actually, the truth is that we are all mostly a great big mess of things – Left, Right, liberal, conservative, gay, straight, bisexual. Accept that about human nature, and the world becomes a much happier place.

Like Gillian Anderson and Edie Campbell, who this week spoke about relationships with women, I’ve had the odd dalliance with a member of the same sex.

As a 20-something, I always felt a bit ashamed of those experiences – now I realise they were normal.

I think it’s great that we live in a world in which people such as Sir Ian encourage people to be themselves, and not one where people are embarrassed into the closet.

It would be great if we could now shut the doors on those times for good.
