‘They have not done anything good in the world’

Victims’ families speak of hopes for retribution

The two captured men should be subjected to “a long, slow, painful death”, according to the daughter of David Haines,

right, one of their victims.

Bethany Haines, who lives in Scotland and was 17 when her father was murdered in September 2014, said yesterday: “My personal opinion is that they die a long, slow, painful death and a lot of people will understand that they should not be allowed to live. Realistically that is not going to happen and the best thing that could happen is they are locked up and they throw away the key.”

Diane Foley, the mother of James Foley,

right, the US journalist who was murdered along with Steven Sotloff, his media compatriot,

left, said the men’s detention would “hopefully protect others from this kind of crime”. Mrs Foley added: “Their crimes are beyond imagination. They have not done anything good in the world, so they need to spend the rest of their life being held.”

Nicolas Henin, a French journalist and former Isil hostage, called for the men to be tried in Britain.
