My multiple chins were sign of healthy pregnancy: Call the Midwife star hits back at trolls

- By Helena Horton

AN ACTRESS from Call the Midwife has said that her “multiple chins” in the latest series of the show were a sign of a healthy pregnancy, as she hit back at online trolls.

Helen George, 33, plays Nurse Trixie Franklin, and filmed series seven of the programme while pregnant by Jack Ashton, her partner and co-star, who plays Rev Tom Hereward. She gave birth last October to a baby girl called Wren Ivy.

Some watching the latest episode tweeted the actress, criticising her weight gain. One wrote: “Helen George is massive. She should be put on a diet.”

She replied: “Sorry if my chins offended you. I chose to feed my baby healthily and not starve myself in a selfish act to look good on TV.

“Would you say this to a pregnant lady’s face? You should look on pregnant ladies’ multiple chins with love – they are busy making the future.”

Some said that George should not be replying to trolls, but she revealed that she has faced abuse for her pregnancy weight gain throughout the airing of the new BBC series. She said: “Oh I know lovely, but so many comments like that come my way – so boring. It’s about a feeling toward pregnant women, that we should all stay skinny xxx”

The actress has spoken previously about her pregnancy, revealing that filming the show put her off a natural birth. Last month, she called for a national conversation about Caesareansections, saying they can be a positive choice for women and should not be restricted to medical emergencies.

She told Radio Times: “I haven’t spoken about this before but I chose to have a C-section. It coincided with the fact that I had to deliver her early but, even without that, I would have gone for an elective Caesarean because of what I’d learnt on Call the Midwife.”
