Game changer

The Queen hands the ebony staff of office to Sarah Clarke, who has been appointed the first female Black Rod in the 650year history of the position in the House of Lords, during an audience at Buckingham Palace. Ms Clarke, who previously ran the administrative side of the Wimbledon tennis championships, becomes Lady Usher of the Black Rod, heading a department that manages the House of Lords’ day-to-day business.
