The Guptas Family at centre of scandal
The Guptas are a wealthy Indian family implicated in a national scandal that has been central to Mr Zuma’s downfall.
In 2016, the anticorruption watchdog ordered Mr Zuma to set up a judicial commission to investigate allegations that the Guptas used close ties with him and his inner circle to secure lucrative contracts with state enterprises and influence government positions. In the report, a former deputy finance minister said during a visit to the Gupta compound, one of the brothers offered him the finance minister job and a massive bag of cash when he declined to sweeten the deal. Both the Guptas and Mr Zuma have denied any wrongdoing or involvement in corruption.
