The documentary series about port towns returns with a focus on Sunderland. The shipbuilding and coal exports that brought Sunderland’s original wealth have disappeared – and now the city is looking to a new future. The episode’s highlight is the Stella Maris Mission run by a wonderful Irish nun who provides merchant seafarers with SIM cards, hoodies and anything else they might need. SH
From Ice to Fire: The Incredible Science of Temperature
BBC FOUR, 9.00PM
Many of us don’t spend a great deal of time thinking about the ins and outs of temperature. Thankfully, physicist Helen Czerski does and the result is this wonderful three-part series. Beginning in southern Iceland, Czerski deftly combines history and science in a fascinating journey that takes in everything from glass blowing to the sinking of the Titanic. SH
Children Who Kill ITV, 9.00PM
Ignore the sensationalist title if you can because this documentary is worth watching. The focus here is on the US’S approach to juvenile justice, as Susanna Reid travels to the country to meet both young killers and, importantly, the families of their victims. SH
My Wonderful Life SKY ONE, 9.00PM
It may sound horribly maudlin but this new series focusing on terminally ill people as they prepare for death makes for lifeaffirming viewing. This episode follows Ian who has advanced prostate cancer as he says goodbye to his wife Christine, friends and family. SH
