Shops flout EU ban on credit and debit card fees
More than one in ten small shops are charging customers to pay by credit and debit card more than a month after a ban was introduced.
On January 13 EU legislation banned businesses charging customers fees for using credit or debit cards to prevent them being stung by rip-off charges at the till. However, an investigation conducted across 150 small shops and restaurants in the South East found that 17, or 11 per cent, were flouting the new rules.
Shops caught breaking the rules will be forced to repay customers.
