America’s gun laws
SIR – In the wake of yet another school shooting in America, President Donald Trump has rightly focused on mental health (report, February 16). Studies should also look into the effect of violent video games on young people.
However, as you point out (leading article, February 16), the common factor is guns and especially semiautomatic rifles. The fact that it is legal for a 19-year-old to purchase such a weapon but against the law to buy an alcoholic drink should make every American question the power which the National Rifle Association (NRA) exercises over US policy.

SIR – If the NRA is so determined to defend and adhere to the clause in the constitution that allows citizens to bear arms, why can’t the US government insist that they do as their forefathers intended and limit them to swords and muzzleloaders?
It might save innocent lives.
