♦ A teenage footballer and his grandfather died at a level crossing as they made their way to a match.

Will Hallett, 15, and Barry Hearnshaw, 72, died instantly after the car was hit by a train at around 8.40am on Saturday. It is understood Will had been due to play at the football match.

Friends paid tribute to the “popular and friendly” teenager as they laid flowers close to the crossing. One pupil said: “Everyone knew Will. He was a lovely, friendly guy.”

A family friend said: “Everyone is asking how it happened when that level crossing is generally safe.”

Rail investigators were last night still examining the scene of the incident close to the village of Barns Green, near Horsham, West Sussex.
