China ‘plays down’ Tibet temple fire

China has been accused of suppressing news of a fire at the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.

Chinese media indicated that a fire at one of the most sacred Buddhist temples was small and “soon put out”, but pictures online showed massive flames and smoke billowing from the 7th-century building. State police were said to be threatening anyone posting pictures on social media.
