Seizing on exceptions
SIR – No wonder Peter Owen (Letters, February 17) disputes the “i before e except after c” spelling aid. He omits half of the rule: “When it sounds like ee, it’s i before e, except after c”.
Thus words like foreign, neighbour, feisty, beige and the diphthong in being are not affected, as they don’t sound like ee. Giles Darling
