Lost Lent self-denial
SIR – I agree with Simon Williams (Telegraph Magazine, February 17) on the highs and lows of churchgoing. Although no churchgoer, I am irritated by the trivialising of church matters.
A local newspaper reported that the Church of England has recommended worshippers give up plastic for Lent. Allied ideas were to avoid buying new CDS and DVDS and to stream shows online instead, and avoid foil-wrapped crisps and chocolates.
When I was a child, we gave up something for Lent that we really enjoyed. The idea of self-denial was to concentrate our minds to consider, perhaps, that other people didn’t have these luxuries. Liz Derbyshire
