Skier hit by avalanche ignored warnings

-

A skier who ignored avalanche warnings was lucky to escape alive after being buried in snow up to his neck last Friday.

Rescuers said the man may have triggered the avalanche in Glen Coe in the Scottish Highlands after ducking under a rope to ski off piste.

After being trapped for about 40 minutes, he managed to move his arm enough to reach his mobile phone and call a friend who alerted the ski patrol at Glencoe Mountain snow sports centre. Davy Gunn, a ski patroller who helped dig the man out, said the skier was swept down the hill in a category three avalanche, big enough to bury a car. The skier was uninjured.
