Others who fell at the line
Cate Campbell
Despite holding the 100m freestyle world record, Cate Campbell, the Australian swimmer, finished sixth in the women’s 100m final at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Penny Oleksiak and Simone Manuel tied for the gold. Campbell admitted that she had felt the pressure of being the overwhelming favourite and let her nerves affect her.
Colin Montgomerie
Considered one of the finest golfers in the world, Montgomerie never won a major championship. He first reached the top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings in 1994, and spent almost 400 weeks in that position. He missed out on his fifth and last chance of major glory after failing to win the US Open at Winged Foot in 2006.
Stephan Feck
In 2010 Stephan Feck, a German diver, won silver at the European Aquatics Championships in Budapest and then at the European Diving Championships in 2011 in Turin.
But at the 2012 Olympics, he scored zero after he slipped off the board, and the video of him landing on his back in the water quickly went viral.
