Red letter day for Kazakh alphabet

Kazakhstan has dropped apostrophes after the use of the punctuation marks in the new Latin alphabet caused uproar.

The alphabet was brought in to replace the Cyrillic version used since Soviet times and the apostrophes were used to denote certain sounds. But critics said they made words too long to read or write. They have been replaced by accents.
