Smart meter security
SIR – Worrying about the security of smart meters (report, February 19) is like worrying about being struck by lightning while you’re crossing a road. We use technology every day that is less secure than smart meters and contains much more information.
Your smart meter only measures how much gas and electricity you are using so that your supplier can issue an accurate bill. It does not contain information such as your name, address or bank details, and it is not directly connected to the payments you send to your energy supplier.
This secure, end-to-end system was developed by experts including the National Cyber Security Centre (part of GCHQ). It is designed to avoid loopholes for hackers, and uses a bespoke wireless network rather than the internet to transfer information. Robert Cheesewright
