SIR – Michael Fallon resigned as defence secretary because his behaviour had “fallen below the high standards that we require of the Armed Forces”.

Jeremy Corbyn is accused of meeting an intelligen­ce operative of what was then a hostile country. Does this not also fall short of what is expected of a man who seeks to be Prime Minister? Phil Mobbs

SIR – If Mr Corbyn had no contact with the Stasi, he should apply to the Bundesbeau­ftragter für die Stasiunter­lagen in Berlin, which will issue a written statement to that effect.

I worked in Germany for more than 30 years as a Ministry of Defence intelligen­ce officer. I applied to the BSTU after I left the service and am happy to say that no evidence of Stasi co-operation was found.

The requisite certificat­e was issued and now hangs in my lavatory. There are, of course, no guarantees. A F Judge
