SIR – I think the word has recently become overused, to the extent that its meaning has become unclear and devalued. It is time that it was given a good rest.

As for words that might do instead, how about unseemly, or the phrase “not in keeping”? Both of these could be applied to the behaviour of politicians and other public servants. Christopher Chadwick
