Stranded dolphin gets lift to safety

-

A dolphin stranded in shallow water has been rescued and driven by car to deeper waters.

The adult male got into difficulty after swimming into a harbour at Mylor Bridge, Cornwall. Volunteers from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue were summoned and the team leader, Dan Jarvis, 32, decided the dolphin could not be returned to the sea where it had become stranded, so bundled it into the back of his car and drove to nearby Falmouth.

The volunteers carried the dolphin on an air bed to the water’s edge and returned it to the sea.

Mr Jarvis said: “It was in the shallows and kept getting stuck, so we took it out of the water on a tarpaulin.

“We had a vet come out to assess it and when we got the all-clear we released it. They don’t normally come up in enclosed spaces. They get disorientated, and that’s most likely why it ended up there.”
