Timetable delays could hit train users in pocket
Rail passengers are at risk of paying more for tickets than they need to because of timetabling delays, a transport watchdog has warned.
Network Rail is supposed to set a national timetable 12 weeks in advance, but is unable to do so between May and December because of a large number of new trains and infrastructure projects. Some services may only be confirmed four weeks beforehand.
Because advance tickets that enable cheaper fares will only be available when a service is confirmed, Transport Focus, the watchdog, fears passengers could buy full price tickets before cheaper advance fares go on sale.
