Alexa … stop swearing at my family

-

 When parents first hear their child spouting swearwords, their instinct might be to blame foul-mouthed school friends or television, but their offspring could be following a more unlikely example: Amazon’s Echo.

The speakers use Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant, to play music using voice commands and parents have complained that its default option is to recommend music from Amazon Music Unlimited, which lacks a feature to blanket block explicit songs.

This means that explicit lyrics can be accessed on the Echo and other supposedly child-friendly gadgets such as Amazon’s Fire Tablet.

Amazon’s terms and conditions state that the “family” subscription to the music service is intended for over 13s only. Apple Music and Spotify do have a parental guidance feature.

Amazon has acknowledged the problem. “We currently do not have an explicit lyric filter on Amazon Music, but are working on a solution,” an Amazon spokesman told The Daily Telegraph.
