Mel B has hinted that the Spice Girls are to reunite for the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, confirming that they are to attend. The singer, known to fans as “Scary Spice”, claimed during an appearance on a US chat show, that she had received a “proper” invitation and appeared to disclose the band are set to perform. The Prince, 33, first met the Spice Girls in 1997, not long after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, at a fundraising concert in South Africa.

AS A 13-year-old, Prince Harry described meeting them as the best day of his life. So who better to perform at his wedding than the Spice Girls?

Mel B has hinted the band is to reunite for the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, after confirming they are to attend.

The singer, known to fans as “Scary Spice”, claimed during an appearance on a US chat show, that she had received a “proper” invitation and appeared to disclose the band are set to perform.

The Prince, now 33, first met the Spice Girls in 1997, not long after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

During a half-term trip to South Africa with his father, the Prince of Wales, the teenage Prince was “fussed over” by the singers, and saw them perform at a fundraising concert.

He is said to have described the meeting as the best day of his life, and went on to host a tea party for the band back in Britain. Ms Markle, who grew up in the US, is reported to also be a fan of the band.

The Spice Girls have confirmed that they are reforming, saying: “The time now feels right to explore some incredible new opportunities together.”

Appearing on The Real, a US television chat show, Mel B was yesterday asked by her co-hosts whether she knew any fellow Britons who had been invited to the wedding.

Nodding, she confessed: “Yeah, I’m going… I don’t know if I should’ve said that!” She then added: “Well us five Spice Girls… why am I so honest?”

The singer, who gained a reputation as the most outspoken of the group in its heyday, appeared to struggle to say nothing as she was asked outright whether they would be performing, looking down with a smile and shaking her head in mock frustration.

As she threw her cue cards in the air, her co-hosts screamed, ran around the studio and exclaimed: “Yes they are performing! Yes!” Mel B added: “I need to go. I’m going to be fired.” Asked for details on what the wedding invitation looked like, she added: “It’s getting too personal to describe it. It was proper. I’m not saying any more.”

Kensington Palace said it did not wish to comment on the claims. It is understood that invitations to non-performing wedding guests have not yet been posted. Other artists tipped to perform include Sir Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Sophie Ellis Bextor, whose song Murder on the Dancefloor was once cited as a favourite of Ms Markle’s.

The Spice Girls may at first seem an unlikely match with the Prince and Ms Markle, who appeared to fit in well at a Brixton radio station better known for playing grime, hip hop, R&B and garage. Prince Harry recently praised his fiancee’s taste in music, saying he could vouch for her “good tunes”. But the Spice Girls have a long record of mixing with royalty, with Geri Halliwell kissing Prince Charles on the cheek and appearing to pinch his bottom. In November 1997, Prince Harry made his first public appearance after his mother’s funeral at their charity concert in South Africa.

Sandy Henney, then press secretary to the Prince of Wales, has previously recalled asking the band to meet the young Prince Harry, and reminding them that he had recently lost his mother. She said Mel C and Victoria Beckham “fussed over him”, while Emma Bunton kissed him on the cheek, leaving the Prince “like the cat who’d got the cream”.

The Prince’s wedding to Ms Markle will take place at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, on May 19.
