What is a “dream job”? This lighthearted documentary from comedian and writer Adam Buxton makes a serious point: that it’s all too easy to get suckered in to the philosophy that your life is worthless unless you’re living some kind of dream lifestyle whereby you adore Monday mornings and are excited to get to the office every single day, and if you don’t love your job, then it’s somehow your fault. The idealistic motivational-speak is punctured with a bit of fun and a welcome dose of reality.

This is a spellbinding adaptation of Chris Larner’s play, which in itself is a gripping and heartbreaking account of how he took his ex-wife, Allyson, to Switzerland, when she was in the latter stages of multiple sclerosis, and helped her to die at Dignitas. It’s a detailed portrait of the sheer amount of work that arranging to die involves, told in an unsentimental but affecting way, as well as an emotional and philosophical journey. It’s also a powerful tribute to the tough, funny, inspirational woman that Allyson was.
