A kind of tune

SIR – I hope that Winchester Cathedral doesn’t follow the example of the church of St James the Great in Barrow, Cumbria, and install a bell silencing system for rehearsals (report, February 28). One of the joys of living in Winchester in the summer is having the windows and doors open on Wednesday evening and listening to the cathedral ringers’ rehearsal. Geraldine Guthrie
