Brrr-itain’s weather is snow laughing matter

-

Idon’t know if you’ve noticed, but there was a bit of snow this week. People have been stuck in cars and on trains, and there is even talk of gas running out. A big storm has been made of this, almost bigger than the Beast from the East – if weather forecasts predicted it, then why weren’t we prepared?

Why does this country seem to lack such grit (literally) when it experiences extreme weather?

Norwegians and Canadians have been mocking us on social media for our inability to deal with it – we are a global laughing stock!

I think we should be a little bit kinder to ourselves. It’s not as if we get snow very often – in fact, in the grand scheme of things, it is vanishingly rare. I remember a dusting five years ago, and have virtually no childhood memories of snow.

Why should we have gritters on standby at great expense when the most snow we see is in adverts at Christmas?

Indeed, I think it’s a bit of a myth that the UK has really bad weather. Yes, it rains from time to time, but on the whole, our meteorological systems are pleasingly dull.

Let’s stop moaning and instead enjoy these days stuck at home in front of a roaring fire – it may be a long time before we see them again.
