Domestic energy

-

SIR – I hope the serious shortages of gas will make the anti-fracking brigade think again.

This country is too dependent upon imported gas from abroad leaving us in a dangerous and vulnerable position when severe weather conditions confront us.

Shale gas is desperately needed to give us security of supply, not only in extremely cold weather, but when there are pipeline failures and other unforeseen problems.

If we ever have shortages that result in having to turn off domestic supplies, we would be faced with an emergency that would result in unimaginable chaos. Unlike electricity it is not a simple operation to turn supplies back on. Pipes have to be purged and every household inspected.

It is time to consider what is in the best interests of the country, whatever side of the fracking debate you have supported in the past. Ray Cope

SIR – I submit my meter readings every three months or so.

Getting a smart meter fitted would disclose to the energy suppliers exactly when I was using that energy. If they then decided that I’m using the energy at what they decide is a “peak rate”, they can legally charge me more.

So do yourselves all a favour and don’t get a smart meter.

Years of going environmentally friendly at the whims of the government have forced the suppliers to get more money off us in some manner or other.

Smart meters were their answer, under their very good tagline that you could save money. Or do they say it helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles? I really can’t remember..
