Carol (2015)

Todd Haynes’s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel is gorgeous, gently groundbreaking, and quite possibly be the saddest thing that you’ll ever see. It tells the story of a photographer (Rooney Mara) who has a relationship with an older woman (Cate Blanchett, with a subtlety that’s little short of phenomenal) in New York. Haynes’s film concludes that love is the riskiest but most necessary gamble in anyone’s experience.
