Polish abandon winter K2 record

The head of a Polish team of climbers says they have given up their attempt to make the first ever winter ascent of the world’s second highest peak, 28,252ft K2.

Krzysztof Wielicki said yesterday they were wrapping up their expedition, which is now based at 16,847ft above sea level, due to harsh weather and the safety of the team.
