7 THE NEW POWER DRESSES

-

When black was chosen as the symbolic redcarpet colour for the Time’s Up campaign, many questioned why white, or angry red, hadn’t been selected instead. They got their turn on Sunday night, as many of Hollywood’s grandes dames opted for single splashes of powerful protest shades. Meryl Streep partnered with Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri – who has cornered the high-fashion market for politicised dressing with her feminist T-shirts and berets – on an elegantly pared-back belted dress in a popping tomato shade. She was joined by Best Supporting Actress winner Allison Janney in Reem Acra. For Margot Robbie, Jane Fonda in longsleeved Balmain and Laura Dern in flounce shouldered Calvin Klein, it was white that felt right. It looked it, too: palette cleansing and poised, but in strong, tailored silhouettes.
