8 THE RED CARPET REBELS
When there is such a preconceived notion of what red-carpet style should be – razzle-dazzle gown, preened-to perfection grooming and a scattering of diamonds – any deviation begs analysis. Frances Mcdormand’s approach of stripping away veneers of glamour seemed even more refreshing for its devil-may-care honesty. We have seen a rise on trousers and tailoring on red carpets in recent years, so it was surprising that more didn’t opt for this modern, sober approach. Emma Stone, in Louis Vuitton, struck just the right note; her jacket’s clash of burgundy and fuchsia made for a playful statement while the cigarette trousers were both chic and serious. And you have to admire French director Agnès Varda’s Gucci for wearing both pyjamas and a cardigan to the Oscars. Cosy.
