You might not ever have found yourself asking that question, but the answer is an interestin­g insight into the cultural history of the country, from the Fifties and Sixties where a rich jazz-influenced musical culture flourished in Khartoum, but when Sharia law was applied in the Eighties, music and public dancing were heavily curtailed. Today, however, some musical freedom is coming back, and some old bands have even re-formed.
