Joy of being able to zip about the countryside

-

sir – In years past I used to walk in the Lake District, and would have fervently supported any campaign to stop developments such as zip wires (report, February 12).

While I am still not sure whether zip wires should be located in certain places, now that I am old and unable to walk up any hill of substance, I would appreciate being able to take a cable car to the peaks of Helvellyn or Skiddaw – though even I would leave Scafell alone.

The desire to preserve the Lakes in aspic is all very well for the fit and healthy, but could be seen as mean and selfish by those who can no longer experience the beauty and joy of viewing the hills from the top of these wonderful mountains. Mike Armstrong
