Nationwide’s advert duo get death threats

- By Francesca Marshall

NATIONWIDE Building Society is considering calling in police after death threats were sent to a duo starring in its television advert.

The whimsical comedy songs of ‘Flo and Joan’ have divided viewers since their first advert was broadcast in December, but a wave of death threats have prompted the building society to consider working “with other brands, industry bodies, such as ISBA, and the Met Police” to look at the true scale of online abuse.

Online users hit out at the sister-act with one viewer tweeting: “So who’s chipping in to get these two singing sisters from the Nationwide advert brutally murdered?” Another added: “Can the sisters from the Nationwide adverts please die a horrible death.”

Originally from Portsmouth, they shot to fame with The 2016 Song, which received 580,000 views on Youtube.

The building society is now looking at working with the Met Police and other bodies to tackle the threats made against the comedy duo, whose real names are Nicola and Rosie Dempsey.

Sarah Bennison, Nationwide’s chief marketing officer, said: “The huge amount of likes and shares have been great. But then there are others who have chosen to post the most vile, abusive and misogynistic comments about the duo.”
