Wild goose chase

-

SIR – In the town of Kelowna in British Columbia on the shores of Lake Okanagan, there is a park. In that park there is a notice instructing people not to feed the geese (Letters, March 8), and to report all nests so that they can be dealt with. It seems that even Canadians don’t want the bird that bears the name of their country.

Incidentally, Lake Okanagan is also home to a cousin of the Scottish Loch Ness Monster, called Ogopogo. Given the number of Canada geese, it would appears that Ogopogo and its relatives – if any – are not making good use of an easily available food source. RL Preston

SIR – The problem of too many Canada geese on the banks of the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts, was solved by running dogs up and down the riverbanks at breeding time, disturbing the birds’ nests.

Their numbers declined rapidly without a shot being fired or a neck being wrung. Ann Garbett
