Brussels bullies

-

SIR – Mario Draghi, the president of the European Central Bank, has condemned US steel tariffs thus: “If you put tariffs against those who are your allies, one wonders who the enemies are.”

The EU’S reaction to Brexit has gone much further than this, seeking to hit British exports across the board and even to make it illegal for its citizens to buy some of our world-beating financial services to ensure that, as Donald Tusk said last week, we pay the cost of recovering our sovereignty.

Mr Tusk comes from Poland, whose people I love and admire. I wish Poland every success and do not wish to impose costs on it. Clearly Mr Tusk’s position is not reciprocal.

Theresa May should withdraw her foolish offer to pay the EU billions of pounds that we do not owe, and reconsider her misguided vision of our being the EU’S “strongest friend and partner”. The EU’S attitude towards us is not one of friendship but of naked hostility. The Government should recognise this and denounce it as such.
