Lottery boost has bee trust buzzing
The conservation of bumblebees has been boosted by a £300,000 award to a leading charity.
The Bumblebee Conservation Trust will use the donation from the People’s Postcode Lottery to expand during the next three years.
Founded in 2006, the Trust has had success in conservation projects in the UK including partnering governments on national pollinator strategies. Two species of bumblebee became extinct in the UK during the 20th century, with a further eight species currently listed on conservation priority lists.
Gill Perkins, chief executive of the trust, said: “Our strategic aims continue to be reversing the declines in our UK bumblebees using science and practical action; to educate and inspire people across society and work as advisers to all the devolved governments, ensuring the pollinator strategies produce real results”.
