All the first day’s races

-

 1.30 Always one of the week’s hottest heats and the first three often make smart chasers. Market has been a poor guide in recent years.

 2.10 Speed rules and this is always a great race. Nicky Henderson and Willie Mullins (right, with Ruby Walsh) have won five of the past six. Footpad is rated a banker by many.

 2.50 The first handicap and, again, favourites have a shocking record. Unexposed horses offer the brightest prospects.

 3.30 The last Champion Hurdle winner to retain his crown was Hardy Eustace in 2005 but Buveur D’air looks something special. The 2015 champion, Faugheen, adds spice.

 4.10 A Mullins benefit ended last year by Apple’s Jade – a former Mullins inmate until he split with Gigginstown Stud. Apple’s Jade looks a class apart

from her rivals.

4.50 Run over four miles, this is the longest race at the Festival. It is for amateur riders, so experience becomes key, as does the heavy ground that will string out this field.

5.30 A trappy handicap for younger horses. Only two of the past 10 winners had run more than four times over fences prior to their success, so, clearly, potential outweighs proven form.
