Time for a small change in how we handle cash

-

sir – The future of the £50 note is in doubt (report, March 14), in part because it is used so little.

This is because it is not dispensed at ATMS. It should be. The largest note in general circulation is the £20, which is derisively small – both by historical measures and by comparison with other currencies such as the dollar and euro.

sir – Never mind ditching the penny. What about ditching the 0.09 penny?

I have to buy my fuel 10 litres at a time because I can’t get my garage to give me the correct change.

sir – The Treasury should think long and hard about the transition to a cashless society.

Although I pay a charge on my current account, I can make cash withdrawals free of charge – provided that I can find a branch. Once we go cashless, I have little doubt that banks would charge me for debit card payments.
