Woman almost died after using phone for 20 hours

- By Neil Connor in Beijing

A CHINESE woman developed life-threatening blood clots on her brain after staring at her phone for 20 hours straight, according to reports from Chinese media.

The 47-year-old migrant worker underwent three hours of surgery, which doctors said had saved her life after her marathon phone session.

She is now recovering following her ordeal, according to one news report that showed her relaxing on a hospital bed – while staring at her phone.

Shanghai-based video site kankanews.com said the unnamed woman was glued to her device after she set off on a long-distance train journey from the central Henan province to the southern city of Guangzhou.

When she got off the train she could barely speak and was having difficulty moving her limbs on one side of her body.

Meng Heng, associate chief physician of The First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University in Guangzhou, said her life would have been in danger if she did not have immediate surgery.

“She maintained the same posture for a long time because there were too many passengers on the train,” said Dr Meng.

“She did not move around, but instead watched the phone with her head slanting to the right. We concluded that she has maintained the same posture for too long, which has pressured her vessels.”

The doctor warned that people should not stay in the same position for too long when using their phones.

He also said there had been an increase in young people suffering from blood clots.

China has the world’s biggest population of web-users, with 772 million people online, according to China internet Network Information Centre, a government agency.
